Week 3 ASSIGNMENTS

1.  Read units 49, 50, 51 in the textbook, list questions you have about the reading, and ask them during class time.

1a.  Go to the following link for images of the Sun that we cover during class-time.
SUN IMAGES

1b.  Read John Bahcall's summary of the status of the solar neutrino problem as of Summer 2001 at the following website:  http://www.sns.ias.edu/~jnb/Papers/Popular/Nature01/nature.html
For an update to Bahcall's 2001 summary, the final word based on further experiments, reported in 2002, is at the following website:http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/
The seventh edition of your book does not include these results so is a little out-dated; there is a question on this Week's quiz concerning the 'problem.'

1c.  Click here for my Week 3 "instructor notes".

1d.  Click here for my concise summary of the defined terms and important equations presented in chapter 8:  Week 3 equation summary.

1e.  The following link provides a very good summary of binary star orbital information.  Even better, scroll to the bottom of the linked page for some simulations - note that your browser must be Java-enabled for these to work, and the developer of the simulations warns that some of them might cause you problems (such as computer freeze-up).  So far, they have worked fine for me and are very helpful.

1f.  For a good introduction to the concept of magnetic fields, go to the following website - it contains good sketches as well as clear descriptions.

1g.  For a discussion and graph of solar irradiance over the past several solar cycles, see the following:

2.  Respond with written answers to the Week 3 discussion questions.   I'll take questions about these during class time.   Assess your responses by comparing with my Week 3 DQ responses on this web-site, as instructed on my responses page.  Turn these in the first day of Week 4.

3.  Print out the Week 3 quiz and circle your answer choice for each question.  I'll take questions about the quiz during class time.   Turn these in the first day of Week 4.
