INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING EBSCO TO FIND MAGAZINE ARTICLES
These
instructions assume you are working from a campus computer, unless otherwise
stated, and that you are looking for a specific article in a periodical (such as
Scientific American, Astronomy, or Sky&Telescope).
1.
Start with the WCC ORCA website: http://www.whatcom.ctc.edu/
2.
Highlight "Current Students" and select
"Library"
3. Single mouse-click on "Online Resources"
4. Single
mouse-click on "Ebsco". If you are working from off-campus, you
will then see a log-on screen; for "USER NAME/LOG ON" use "whatcom", and for
"PASSWORD" use "college".
5. On the Ebsco page that
opens, make sure that the "Academic Search Elite" box has a check mark, then
single mouse-click on the "Continue" tab.
6. On the page that opens
next, with lots of fields to fill in, ignore all the fields and click on the tab
near the top of the page called "Publications"
NOTE: IF YOU ELECT TO USE PROQUEST INSTEAD OF EBSCO (FOR
INSTANCE, TO LOCATE ARTICLES IN SKY & TELESCOPE), AGAIN CLICK ON
"PUBLICATIONS". IF WORKING FROM HOME YOU'LL NEED THE FOLLOWING
INFORMATION USER NAME/LOG ON: FB77GB7DSX (use caps) PASSWORD:
welcome
7. You should now be looking at a page
containing a very long list of publications. In the "Browse for" fill-in space
near the top of the page, enter the name of the publication (for example,
Scientific American), and single mouse-click on "Browse".
8. Single
mouse-click on (for example) "Scientific American"
9. From the
list of years that appears, single mouse-click on the year of your article, wait
a few seconds, then select the issue/month and look through the contents to find
your article.
Depending on the mood of the publisher, you may or may
not have access to pictures and illustrations contained in the hard copy of the
article. If you want to see figures, you may have to use hard copies available
in the WCC, WWU, or public libraries.
